“Not only does a St. Mary’s education change the community because our graduates work throughout Uganda even in those extreme hard to reach places, but a St. Mary’s education changes the student.  With a St. Mary’s education the student can support her family and reduce dependency while also having the fulfillment of helping others.”

Overview

St. Mary’s Midwifery Training School provides excellent educational programs in a Catholic environment which enhances the unique intellectual, moral, spiritual, and psychosocial development of the person. The faculty accepts the responsibility to prepare professional midwives for evidence-based practice at the basic and advanced levels that reflect the values and standards of the profession.  Midwives modify patient care interventions during the advanced use of the nursing process to incorporate evidence from research inquiry into practice demonstrating development of clinical judgment skills. Respect, caring and compassion are integral to both midwifery and the Catholic identity and are demonstrated by valuing the dignity and worth of persons, service to others, social justice, selflessness, autonomy, and integrity.  Midwives respond to the diverse and changing needs of society in the local community as well as the broader global community by using communication techniques and caring interventions supported by Catholic values.

Teaching Philosophy

The faculty at St. Mary’s Midwifery Training School believes that teaching-learning is a dynamic, interactive sharing of knowledge that stimulates lifelong learning for both learner and educator.  Learning is facilitated when activities are goal-directed, purposeful, and meaningful for the learner. The faculty guides, directs, facilitates and evaluates learning while promoting critical thinking, active participation and independent thinking by students.

We believe that both learners and faculty are responsible for a collaborative teaching-learning process. Students are responsible for engaging in learning opportunities while faculty is responsible for providing innovative nursing education based on theory and evidence. The faculty pledges to maintain our expertise and to promote nursing knowledge. They strive to create an intellectually challenging learning environment where the faculty role models professional education and nursing standards. They believe in developing caring relationships with students that promote personal, spiritual, academic and professional growth.

The faculty believes in developing the learner to her greatest potential through growth of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are hallmarks of the professional nurse.
