International Midwives Day

Uganda celebrated International Midwives Day on May 5th, 2023, in the eastern town of Soroti. The celebration was attended by midwives from all parts of Uganda including students from St. Mary’s Midwifery Training School in Kalongo. “The African Midwives,” a poem demonstrating the role of African midwives in handling maternal and child healthcare was presented by the students. The students also presented a traditional dance. International Midwives Day was not only a colorful ceremony but also had many learning points. It was a day in celebration of recognition and appreciation for all midwives and their diligent efforts and contributions toward maternal and child health.
